Discovering and managing ChromeOS devices

This topic describes the process of discovering, managing, and troubleshooting ChromeOS devices enrolled in enterprise environments using BigFix Mobile and Modern Client Management (MCM) integrated with Google Workspace.

Device Discovery

After a ChromeOS device completes enterprise enrollment—either through manual email enrollment or zero-touch enrollment—it automatically synchronizes with the BigFix Mobile and Modern Client Management (MCM) server via Google Workspace integration.
  1. Log in to the BigFix WebUI.
  2. Navigate to Devices , click on a ChromeOS device. The device details page is displayed.
  3. Review the device details page to confirm the following information:
    • Device ID
    • Serial Number
    • OS Agent Type
    • Last Reported Time
    • Management Metadata

Managing ChromeOS devices through policies

Administrators can manage discovered ChromeOS devices through policies and remote actions directly from the BigFix WebUI.

Create, edit, and delete policies targeted toward specific Organizational Units (OUs).

Supported policies

  • App deployment policy
  • Kiosk policy
  • Network (Wi-Fi/VPN) policy
  • OS Update policy
  • Passcode policy
  • Restriction policy
  • Custom from template
  • Custom policies

Managing ChromeOS devices through actions

Perform remote management actions such as restart, wipe, remote powerwash, and unenroll directly from the BigFix WebUI.
Supported actions
Action What it does Use case Effect on user data
Restart Remotely restarts the Chrome OS device. Needed after policy changes, software updates, or troubleshooting. None; device restarts without data loss.
Wipe - Wipe all users off Removes the logged in user profile from the Chrome OS device Employee leaves or changes roles, but the device remains in use. Only that user’s data and settings are erased.
Wipe - Remote Powerwash Triggers a factory reset remotely, similar to wiping, via the Chrome Management API. Device needs to be reset without physical access. All local data and accounts are removed; device returns to factory reset state.
Unenroll Removes the device from BigFix and Google Workspace management. Device is leaving the organization or being transferred to a different admin domain. Device stays functional, but user data, management policies, monitoring, and actions are removed.
