Using the External Site Referral target

Add this target to web activities to target customers who have just entered your site from a link on a specific external site.

Procedure

  1. Create a new activity, or edit an existing inactive activity.
  2. Drag the External Site Referral target from the palette onto a flow connector to the left of the action element that you want to target.
  3. Click the External Site Referral target to display its properties in the bottom half of the page.
  4. In the properties view, choose the appropriate Target customers option.
  5. In the External site list, choose one of the following options:

    Google search

    Yahoo search

    Select one of these options to target customers who have entered your site following a keyword search on one of these sites. Then continue to the next step.
    Other Select this option to target customers who entered your site from an external site you specify. Then skip to step 11.
  6. Select a Keyword matching rule for the search keyword that target customers must have used on the external site. The following options are available:

    Search keyword is exactly one of the following values On the external search site, the customer must have typed the exact search keyword you specify to match the target.
    Search keyword starts with one of the following valuesOn the external search site, the customer must have typed a search keyword that starts with the characters you specify to match the target.
    Search keyword contains one of the following valuesOn the external search site, the customer must have typed a search keyword that contains the string of characters you specify to match the target.
    Search keyword ends with one of the following valuesOn the external search site, the customer must have typed a search keyword that ends with the characters you specify to match the target.
    Search keyword can be anything On the external search site, the customer must have typed any keyword to match the target. If you choose this option, skip to step 14
  7. Above the Search keywords table, click New New to add a row to the table.
  8. In the new row, type all or part the search keyword that the customer must type to match the target, depending upon what you chose as a Keyword matching rule.
    For example, if you want to target customers who searched for camera, cameras, or digital cameras then:
    1. In the Keyword matching rule list, select Search keyword contains one of the following values.
    2. Specify the search keyword camera in the Search keywords table. This will match searches for camera, cameras, and digital cameras.
  9. To add additional search keywords to the table, click New New.
  10. Skip to step 14.
  11. Select a Domain matching rule for the domain name of the external site. The following options are available:
    OptionDescription
    Domain is exactly the following value The domain name of the external site must be an exact match to the domain name you specify. For this matching rule, in the Domain field, you must type the exact domain name, for example, www.example.com.
    Domain contains the following value The domain name of the external site must contain the portion of the domain name you specify.

    Example: If you specify example in the Domain field, then the external site can be www.example.com or www.example.ca, and so on.

    Domain ends with the following value The domain name of the external site must end with the portion of the domain name you specify.

    Example: If you specify example.com in the Domain field, then the external site can be www.example.com or www.zzzexample.com, and so on.

  12. In the Domain field, type all or part the domain name that referred the customer, depending upon what you chose as a Domain matching rule.
  13. Optional: You can specify a parameter that must be present in the URL of the external site page that contained a link to your site:
    1. In the Parameter name field, type the name exactly as it must display in the referral URL.
      Example: If you want to match referral URLs that contain the parameter q=camcorder, then the parameter name is q.
    2. Select a Parameter value matching rule for the value in the name-value pair.
    3. Above the Parameter values table, click New New to add a row to the table.
    4. In the new row, type all or part the parameter value, depending upon what you chose as a Parameter value matching rule.
      If you want to match referral URLs that contain the parameter q=camcorder, then the parameter value is camcorder.
    5. Optional: To add additional values to the table, click New New.
  14. Select a different element from the palette to continue defining your activity, or click Save and Close to save the activity.
