Administering DevOps Code ClearCase®

License servers and license administration
Most DevOps Code ClearCase® applications and commands (cleartool commands, for example, or GUIs such as the ClearTeam Explorer) require a license to run.
ClearCase Licensing
ClearCase Licensing uses an active-user floating license scheme. A user must obtain a license, which grants the privilege to use DevOps Code ClearCase® on any host served by the same license server.
Specifying a license server host
Each DevOps Code ClearCase® host must be configured to obtain licenses from a specific license server host. This configuration typically occurs during installation, and is often taken from a site default specified by the DevOps Code ClearCase administrator.

    You can configure a DevOps Code ClearCase® host running Linux® or the UNIX system to support access to VOBs and dynamic views from computers that do not run DevOps Code ClearCase.

Specifying a license server host

Each DevOps Code ClearCase® host must be configured to obtain licenses from a specific license server host. This configuration typically occurs during installation, and is often taken from a site default specified by the DevOps Code ClearCase® administrator.

About this task

Note: A license server hosted on any platform can provide licenses for all types of DevOps Code ClearCase® hosts. However, when you use a Windows® computer as the license server host, it must be a member of a domain in which accounts are defined for all users, including those who use Linux® and the UNIX® system, who will acquire licenses from it. For more information, see Common user and group names.

To reconfigure a DevOps Code ClearCase® host to use a different license server, do one of the following:

Procedure

On Linux® and the UNIX® system, the license server host name is stored in the file /var/adm/clearcase/config/license_host. You can edit this file with any text editor to specify the name of a new license server host.
On Windows®, the license server host name is specified on the Licensing page of the ClearCase® program in Control Panel as the value Use license server on host:.
You can also use the DevOps Code ClearCase® Administration Console to change the license server used by any DevOps Code ClearCase® host in your network:
1. Go to the host node for the host whose license server you want to change. This can be the My Host node or a subnode of the ClearCase® Network node in DevOps Code ClearCase® Administration Console, or the top-level node in ClearCase® Host Administration.
2. Click Action > Properties. This command opens a window in which you can change the host’s license server. To change the license server for a remote host, the host must be configured to allow remote administration, and you must be a privileged user.

Results

Note: When a user accesses multiple DevOps Code ClearCase® hosts that use different license servers, the user acquires a license from each server. When a user accesses multiple DevOps Code ClearCase® hosts that use the same license server, the user acquires a single license.
