Administering
Overview of administering a WebSphere Commerce site
In WebSphere Commerce the person who performs administrative tasks is called a Site Administrator. The Site Administrator installs, configures, and maintains WebSphere Commerce and the associated software and hardware. The administrator responds to system warnings, alerts, and errors, and diagnoses and resolves system problems. Typically, this person controls access and authorization (creating and assigning members to the appropriate role), manages the Web site, monitors performance, and manages load balancing tasks. The Site Administrator might be responsible for establishing and maintaining several server configurations for different stages of development such as testing, staging, and production. The Site Administrator also handles critical system backups and resolves performance problems.
Administration Console
Site Administrators use the Administration Console to control a site or store by completing administrative operations and configuration tasks such as publishing stores, refreshing the registry, and scheduling jobs. You can access the Administration Console at a site-level, or for a particular store.
Scheduler
The Scheduler is a background server that schedules and launches jobs, both at the site and store levels. From the Configuration menu of the Administration Console, the scheduler allows Site Administrators to schedule and configure jobs.
Jobs
A job is a WebSphere Commerce command that is scheduled to run on behalf of a site or store at a specified time or interval. There are three types of jobs.

Product Advisor creation and maintenance is an ongoing process for the site administrator and the store developer.

The cycle loosely follows these listed steps:

Create the Product Advisor search space. You can create a separate search space either by using command utilities that require an XML file, using the User Interface from WebSphere Commerce Accelerator, or manually running the SQL files.
Note: If you are using a separate search space for your metaphor, and product data is changed using the Loader, the Catalog Editor, or the messaging system, the search space will be updated by commands designed to keep the database and search space synchronized.
Create an XML input file to import the shopping metaphor definitions for the search space if you are using a command utility.
Create metaphors using the WebSphere Commerce Accelerator or the command utilities.
Create JSP files for metaphor display.
If you are using the separate search space, update the search space to include new, or exclude existing user defined attributes. This effectively repopulates the search space.
Update the metaphors after changing the separate search space to reflect changes such as new or deleted attributes.
Include shopping metaphors in the site's navigation.
Migrate Product Advisor data from staging server to production server.
Customer invokes shopping metaphors.
Statistics are collected for the metaphors. To enable this feature, refer to the instructions in configuring Marketing Events statistical counters.
