An alternate name is helpful when a user wants to use his or her native language and character set to type, display, and look up names. For example, users can type a name in a native language and character set when sending mail.   This section presents the planning concepts and setup procedures necessary for a successful HCL Domino® deployment over a network. It provides information on network protocols from a Domino perspective but does not attempt to provide general network information.

  Topics in this section describe how to set up users and servers.
  - Understanding the Server document
    The Server document is set up when you register a server. It contains many of the settings that define how your server operates.
  - Policies
    Use Domino® policy settings to control how users work with Notes®. A policy is a document that identifies a collection of individual policy settings. Policy settings documents define a set of defaults that apply to the users and groups to which the policy is assigned. You can change policy settings and they will be automatically applied to the assigned users and groups.
  - Domino IQ
    Domino 14.5 adds support for running an AI inference engine in the Domino backend.
  - Defining default settings for Notes® user registration
    Before you register new Notes® users, you can specify default settings that apply to all users. Default settings simplify user registration and ensure user settings consistency. You can define many default settings, such as what mail server users have or what certifier ID to use for user registration. You can also specify a default workstation execution control list (ECL) to protect data from unauthorized workstation access.
  - Using groups
    Groups are lists of users, groups, and servers that have common traits. They are useful for mailing lists and access control lists. Using groups can simplify administration tasks.
  - Replicas
    You can make a database available to users in different locations, on different networks, or in different time zones, by creating replicas of the database.
  - Calendars and scheduling
    The calendar and scheduling features allow users to check the free time of other users, schedule meetings with them, and reserve resources, such as conference rooms and equipment.

    The Domino and Notes notes.ini files contain the settings required for the server and client to operate correctly. If you modify or add settings in a notes.ini file, do so cautiously and never edit the file directly with a text editor.

        You can configure HCL Verse® so that users can open HCL Notes® links (document, view, or application links) in either a new browser window or in Notes. Verse® supports Notes links to any server, as long as the user has access to the application to which the link connects and the application is on an HCL Domino® server in the local area network. This is also useful for Verse users who reply with history or forward a thread with Notes links back to a Notes user. You can also configure the server to offer Notes links only or web links only.
      - Setting a maximum attachment size
        You can set a maximum attachment size other than the default value.
    - Renaming a Verse user
      You rename an HCL Verse® user who has an HCL Notes® ID and an HCL Notes certified public key located in their person document in the Domino® Directory the same way that you rename a Notes® user.
    - Specifying notes.ini file settings for Verse
      A number of notes.ini file settings are available to help you tune your configuration of HCL Verse®. This section contains two of the notes.ini file settings for Verse®.
  - Configuring Web servers
    This section describes how to set up the HCL Domino® Web server, and the Domino Web Navigator.
  - Setting up a cluster
    Setting up a cluster includes the tasks of creating and verifying that it is working correctly, and then setting up user access, mail, replications, size quotas, directory assistance, roaming, web navigation, and use of a private LAN in the cluster.

Configuring alternate name support in Verse

An alternate name is helpful when a user wants to use his or her native language and character set to type, display, and look up names. For example, users can type a name in a native language and character set when sending mail. A user's primary name is recognizable to an international audience; an alternate name is recognizable to the user's native language.

About this task

By default, HCL Verse® allows users to view alternate names but not in any language other than English. You can change Verse to allow users to send and view alternate names in their own native language.

Note: Before a user can use an alternate name for a primary name, you must register and certify the alternate name.

To allow users to display alternate names in the language of their choice

About this task

Complete this procedure so that users can select the Display alternate names option in the Verse Settings for Mail. Users can then display alternate names in the languages supported by their browser.

Procedure

From the HCL Domino® Administrator, click Configuration and expand the Messaging section.
Click Configurations.
Select the configuration settings document for the Verse® mail server or servers, and click Edit Configuration.
Select the HCL Verse tab.
Under Mail, enable Name resolution and validation.
Under International, enable Alternate name support.
Under International, enable Allow user to choose the alternate name display.
Save the document and restart the Domino® server.

To allow users to view alternate names in the languages set by the server

Complete this procedure so that users can then display alternate names in the languages set by you on the server.

Procedure

Perform steps 1 through 6 in the To allow users to display alternate names in the language of their choice procedure.
Disable the setting Allow user to choose alternate name display.
In the field Preferred alternate name languages, choose languages from the list.
Save the document and restart the Domino® server.
