Defining filters and operators by using the Query wizard

Use the Define query filters page of the Query wizard to define static and dynamic filters and filter-expression operators.

About this task

To define filters and filter-expression operators:

Procedure

  1. In the Filters pane, select a filter-expression operator or a filter to define.
    • Right-click a filter-expression operator and click And or Or to toggle its value.
    • Right-click a filter and use the popup-menu commands to create filter expressions:
      • To group one filter with another, which creates a complex filter expression, click Group.
      • To delete a filter, click Delete.
      • To move or regroup a filter, Cut orCopy, and then clickPaste.
  2. In the definitions pane on the right, further define static and dynamic filters.
The content in the definitions pane reflects your selection in the Filters pane.
    • To define a static filter:
      1. Select the filter in the Filters pane.
      2. In the definitions pane, select the Define Filter option.
      3. Select an operator from the Operator list. You will use this operator and the filter values that you select next to create a filter definition.

The list of available operators associated with defining a filter is dependent on the type of data (text, numeric, or date) associated with the filter.

      4. Select the Not check box if you want the evaluation of the filter definition to be the opposite of the operator that you just selected.
      5. If the Values button is available, click it to see a list of predefined field values. Select one or more values to include in the filter definition. Then click OK.

An alternative method is to enter a comma-separated list of values in the Values field. Use uppercase and lowercase letters carefully because the evaluation for values is case sensitive. When you are finished, click Set Value. The filter definition appears in the Filters pane. When you are finished, click Set Value. The filter definition appears in the Filters pane.

    • To define a dynamic filter:
      1. Select the Dynamic Filter option.
      2. In the corresponding field, either keep the default prompt, or customize it.
      3. When you are finished, click Set Value.

The filter definition appears in the Filters pane.

  3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to create each filter definition.
  4. When you are finished, click Run to run the query.

The query is assigned a default name and runs. The results appear on the Result set page.

  5. Save or discard the query.
    • To save the query, click File > Save or File > Save As and specify a name.
    • To discard the query, click File > Close. Click No when asked to confirm whether you want to save the query.
