Upgrading the scanner, tools and actions
Upgrade BigFix Inventory scanner, tools, and actions as part of the server upgrade process.
Before you begin
In BigFix Inventory version 11.0.1.0, with release backward compatibility breaking change, there is a different deployment path of the scanner. To support the past and new deployment paths, we have introduced Scanner Wrapper to manage the complexity. From BigFix Inventory version 11.0.1.0, the Analysis and Fixlets refers to the old and new scanner only through the Scanner Wrapper. Scanner Wrapper is part of the “Install or Upgrade Scanner” fixlet and will be updated with every scanner update.
- After refreshing the BigFix Inventory site, run the one-time action: Create Scanner Wrapper for Scanner 11.0.0 (9.2.35) or older against all relevant endpoints.

Remember to upgrade the actions first before upgrading Scanner to version 11.0.1.

Proceed with the upgrade process as before.
About this task
- Upgrade the VM Manager tool to the latest version.
- In the BigFix console, go to Fixlets and Tasks.
- Select Update VM Manager Tool to version number, and click Take Action.
- Select the computer on which the VM Manager Tool is installed, and click OK.
- It is recommended to restart actions like Initiate Software Scan and Upload
Software Scan Results to benefit from improvements and new features. For other
fixlets and a list of updated actions, refer to Release notes. You can also check Source
Release Date to see updated action.Note: This step is mandatory. Old actions will not work with updated Scanner to version 11.0.1.0 or higher.
- Update the BigFix Inventory scanner on an operating system that is supported. New scanner releases contain security fixes,
fixes of problems that appear in your environment, or new features that you want to use.
Upgrade the scanner to the latest version. For information about changes introduced in
each version of the scanner, see the Release Notes.
To update the scanner, perform the following steps:
- In the BigFix console, go to Actions.
- Look for actions started by the fixlets that were updated, right-click each action, and click Stop Action.
- In the BigFix console, go to Fixlets and Tasks.
- Select Install or Update Scanner, and click Take Action.
- Select all relevant computers, and click OK.
- Run the updated version of the fixlets.
