Planning is critical to a successful deployment. Many deployment problems, growth problems, and capacity problems occur because not enough time is taken to carefully plan a deployment. Plan your IBM® Sametime® installation by determining features needed, reviewing system requirements, determining capacity requirements, and the servers and computers needed for your deployment.
System and infrastructure requirements
Sametime® system and infrastructure requirements include network planning, policy planning, password and parameter planning and planning for single sign-on.
Ports
IBM® Sametime® uses a number of ports. There are ports for connecting server to servers, clients to servers, and WebSphere Application Server ports to configure. The topics in this section list the default ports and their uses, and ports to open in firewalls. A range of ports means that the application can select any port in that range if one or more of those ports are already in use by other applications.
Ports to open in firewalls for WebSphere® clusters
For each IBM® WebSphere® Network Deployment cluster in your deployment, you must open ports in the firewalls between members of the cluster to enable communications.
Application Server ports
Open ports on each IBM® WebSphere® Application Server in the cluster so it can communicate with cluster members.

Open the Ports page for the application server by completing the following steps:

In the deployment manager's IBM WebSphere Integrated Solutions Console, click Servers > WebSphere application servers.
In the table of application servers, click the cluster member link next to the name of the node you are modifying.
On the configuration page, look under "Additional Properties" and click Ports.
Set the ports as described in Table 1 and Table 2.

Open the ports in Table 1 between all application servers and the deployment manager:

Open the ports in Table 2 to all end users and to all nodes that host a WebSphere SIP proxy server for connecting end users to the cluster.
