Configuring Standard Events and Payload Transformations

Configure standard events and apply destination payload transformations using the HCL Customer Data Platform (CDP) user interface.

The Event Dictionary serves as the central schema catalog within HCL CDP, governing data integrity and payload routing across connected sources and downstream destinations.

While custom events allow you to define and manage application-specific customer actions, HCL CDP provides pre-configured Standard Events representing foundational interaction methods:

  • page: Captures web page view events and associated attributes.
  • screen: Captures mobile application screen views and associated attributes.
  • identify: Binds user identities, traits, and identifiers across channels.

Previously, mapping destinations and applying transformations for standard events required backend database or SQL configurations. With the introduction of the dedicated Standard Events screen, you can now define destination mappings, manage event property rules, and apply payload transformations directly from the HCL CDP UI.

Key Constraints

When configuring standard events, keep the following behavior in mind:

  • Fixed Event Count: Standard events are strictly limited to the three core system events (page, screen, and identify).
  • No Additions or Deletions: You cannot create new standard events or delete existing ones. To define custom behavioral events, refer to Managing Custom Events.
  • Transformation Flexibility: You can configure custom payload mappings and apply transformation rules independently across different destinations for each standard event.

Prerequisites

Before configuring standard event transformations, verify that you have:

  • Access permissions for the Data Pipeline module in HCL CDP.
  • Configured at least one downstream data destination in Data Pipeline > Destinations to map events to.
  • Knowledge of the target schema and destination API payload requirements.

Procedure

Follow these steps to configure standard events and map payload transformations to destinations:

  1. In the left navigation pane, go to Data Pipeline > Event Dictionary.
  2. Select the Standard Events tab or view.

The interface displays the three fixed standard events: page, screen, and identify.

  3. Select the standard event that you want to configure, for example, identify.
  4. In the event details configuration panel:
    • Review the pre-defined event properties and associated data types.
    • Select + Add Destination Mapping (or choose an existing destination associated with this event).
  5. In the Destination Transformation & Mapping section:
    • Select the target destination from the list.
    • Define the payload mappings by associating the incoming standard event properties with the corresponding JSON attribute keys expected by the destination endpoint.
    • (Optional) Apply transformation functions to adjust value formats, string cases, or date representations before forwarding the payload.
  6. Select Save.
