Programming Domino for Web Applications
You should be aware of certain procedures, restrictions, and enhancements available to you when using Domino Designer to program Web applications. This section describes the following areas:
Web services
Previewing Web services
Web services can be previewed locally before being released. Unlike local previews of forms and views, which simply allow a designer to view the form or view, a local preview of a Web service has two distinct parts. First, a simple form is presented for viewing, which contains a link to the WSDL document for the web service. That link is the complete description of the service as it was designed. In addition, the web server is started on your workstation in preview mode and is able to handle SOAP requests sent to it from any other program on the same machine. Therefore development tools can be used to develop the client-side of the web service.

      The formula language works, with restrictions, for Web applications. The formula language is particularly useful for implementing Notes client menu commands as buttons, hotspots, and actions in the browser environment where the Notes client menu is not available. This section describes:

        A Web service is a self-contained, self-describing, modular application, based on XML, that can be published to and invoked from the Web. Domino Web services are based on the following W3C standards:
      - Web services in Domino Designer
        The Web Service Provider design element exists under "Code" in the Applications Navigator. The design element has a properties box with Basics, Security, and Advanced tabs, and an editor pane. The functional part of a Web service is a compiled program. A Web service also maintains a WSDL document that reflects the program interface. An imported WSDL document is maintained as is. If coding changes affect the interface, the WSDL document is regenerated when a Web service is saved. Note that when the WSDL document is regenerated for a LotusScript Web service, all LotusScript identifiers which become WSDL names appear in upper-case. This is because LotusScript is a case-insensitive language, and identifier names are maintained internally in uppercase only.
      - Previewing Web services

        Version 7.0 introduced the Web Service design element, which lets you write a web service and host it on your Domino server, so that it can be called from other computers.

        A Web service must exist in a database on a Domino server to be used. Replication is a simple way to move locally designed Web services to servers. Web services on production servers should be properly protected by appropriately signing the Web service and setting the Security tab.

To preview an open Web service document

Procedure

In an open Web services document, choose Design - Preview in Default Web Browser. You will be prompted to save any changes. If you do not save your changes, Designer will preview your work without the changes.
Optional: To stop the Web browser preview without exiting Notes, choose Tools - Stop Local Web Preview Process.
