Installing extensions in air-gapped environment
You can manually install required extensions inside a custom dev container when operating in an air-gapped environment.
Before you begin
Before installing extensions in an air-gapped dev container, review the following prerequisites:
- Administrator prerequisite: Ensure that an administrator has configured your local extension registry and published the required extensions. For details, see Configuring extension registry.
- Ensure that an administrator has configured the custom dev container specification for your teamspace. For details, see Configuring dev containers.
- Learn how extension installation and lifecycle management work within containers by reading Extensions in dev containers.
- Familiarize yourself with the layout of the Code browser IDE by reviewing Code IDE user interface.
- If you prefer to automate extension installation during container builds rather than installing them manually, see Loading extensions from local .vsix files.
About this task
In an air-gapped environment, custom dev containers (such as a Java dev container) do not automatically install extensions upon launch — except for the DevOps Code extension.
Once an administrator has configured the local extension registry, developers can manually locate and install approved extensions inside their running dev container session.
Procedure
- Launch your custom dev container in Code.
- In the primary sidebar, click the Extensions icon to open the Extensions view.
- Search for the required extension hosted in your local registry and click Install.
Results
The selected extensions are now active and operational inside your active dev container session.
