Synopsis

mkregion –tag region-tag [ –tco/mment tag-comment ] [ –rep/lace ]

Description

The mkregion command registers a new network region by adding a new region tag (region name) and, optionally, a comment to the regions file on the ClearCase registry server host. Use the lsregion command to display the region tags contained in regions.

After creating a new region, you can create VOB tags and view tags for the region with mktag, mkvob, and mkview.

A ClearCase client host can belong to only one region. Use the hostinfo –long command to display the client host's registry region. For more information about ClearCase network regions, see the DevOps Code ClearCase Administrator's Guide.

Restrictions

None.

Options and arguments

Specifying the region tag

Default
None. You must name the region.
–tag region-tag
Names the region. region-tag can be up to 32 characters.
–tco/mment tag-comment
Adds a comment to the region-tag's entry in the registry file. Use lsregion –long to display the tag-comment.

If you migrate a registry server from ClearCase Version 2 to Version 3, ClearCase automatically registers regions from existing Version 2 sites and assigns them the following comment string:

"region defined automatically"

If a ClearCase Version 2.x client creates a region in a Version 3 registry, ClearCase assigns the following comment string:

"region defined implicitly by V2.x client"

In Version 3, you must use mkregion to create a network region. However, a Version 2.x client can create a network region implicitly with a command such as:

cmd-context mkvob –tag /vobs/myvob –region new_region myvob.vbs

cmd-context mkvob –tag \myvob –region new_region myvob.vbs

Overwriting an existing tag

Default
An error occurs if mkregion names a region-tag that already exists.
–rep/lace
Replaces the tag-comment of an existing region-tag. No error occurs if the region-tag does not exist. You cannot use –replace to change an existing region-tag; to do so, you must first delete the existing tag with rmregion –tag, and then create a new one with mkregion –tag.

Examples

The UNIX system and Linux examples in this section are written for use in csh. If you use another shell, you might need to use different quoting and escaping conventions.

The Windows examples that include wildcards or quoting are written for use in cleartool interactive mode. If you use cleartool single-command mode, you might need to change the wildcards and quoting to make your command interpreter process the command appropriately.

In cleartool single-command mode, cmd-context represents the UNIX system and Linux shells or Windows command interpreter prompt, followed by the cleartool command. In cleartool interactive mode, cmd-context represents the interactive cleartool prompt.

  • Register a new region with tag us_east.
