Create snapshot Fixlet

Use the Create Snapshot Fixlet to capture the current state of a virtual machine before deploying patches or software, enabling rollback if the deployment causes issues.

About this task

Before deploying patches or software to a virtual machine (VM), you can create a snapshot to preserve the VM's current state. If the deployment fails or causes unexpected problems, the administrator can restore the VM to the snapshot, minimizing downtime and data loss. BigFix coordinates with the virtualization platform (such as VMware vCenter) to create and store the snapshot automatically as part of the deployment workflow.

Procedure

  1. Select the virtual machine (VM) in BigFix.
  2. Choose the Create Snapshot option before starting the deployment.
  3. BigFix sends a request to the virtualization platform (such as VMware vCenter) to create a snapshot of the VM.
  4. The snapshot saves the current state of the VM, including:
    • The virtual disk
    • The memory (if enabled)
    • The VM configuration
  5. After the snapshot is created successfully, BigFix starts the deployment (for example, installing patches or software).

Results

The snapshot is created successfully and BigFix starts the deployment.
Note: When the Create Snapshot Fixlet is deployed, the snapshot is created and stored in VMware vCenter under the corresponding virtual machine's Snapshots category.

What to do next

  1. If the deployment causes any problems, the administrator can restore the VM to the snapshot, returning it to its previous working state.
  2. If the deployment is successful, the snapshot should be deleted to free up storage space and maintain VM performance.
