Setting the default Java Runtime for a Java 2-enabled browser
See the help below that corresponds to your browser.
Netscape Version 6 or 7 or equivalent level of Mozilla
The Java 2 plug-in that you have installed may or may not have a setting to configure the Java Runtime for Netscape. If not, then the default setting is probably correct. Follow these steps to check the setting:
- Start the Java 2 Plug-in Control Panel. For help see Launching the Java 2 Plug-in Control Panel.
- Click the Browser tab.
- Find the statement that says, Java Plug-in will be used as the default Java Runtime in the following browser(s):
- Under this statement, the checkbox for Netscape 6 or Netscape 7 should be checked.
- If you change the setting of the checkbox then click Apply to apply the change.
Microsoft Internet Explorer on Windows platform
You may have to change a setting in both the following tools:
- The Java 2 plug-in.
- Microsoft Internet Explorer.
See the directions below for each tool.
The Java 2 plug-in
The Java 2 plug-in that you have installed may or may not have a setting to configure the Java Runtime for Microsoft Internet Explorer. If not, then the default setting is probably correct. Follow these steps to check the setting:

- Click the Browser tab.
- Find the statement that says, Java Plug-in will be used as the default Java Runtime in the following browser(s):
- Under this statement, the checkbox for Microsoft Internet Explorer should not be checked.
- If you change the setting of the checkbox then click Apply to apply the change.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
The version of Internet Explorer that you are using may or may not have a setting to configure which Java Runtime is used when an HTML file launches an applet with the HTML <applet> command. If not, then the default setting is probably correct. Follow these steps to check the setting:
- Click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
- Find the checkbox that says, Use Java 2 for <applet>.
- This checkbox should not be checked.
- Restart the browser.
Considerations when using the Microsoft Windows XP SP2
In the Z and I Emulator for Web documentation, HCL recommends that a Java 2 JRE not be used as the default Java Runtime for Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is also recommended that the Internet Explorer browser not use the Java 2 JRE for <applet>HTML tags in Tools >Internet Options > Advanced. These recommendations were made with the assumption that the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (JVM) would be on the local computer. Because the Microsoft JVM is not being shipped with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you must have the Java 2 JRE be the default Java Runtime for Internet Explorer. This is configured in the Java Plug-in Control Panel under Browsers. You must also select the checkbox for using a Java 2 JRE for <applet> in Tools->Internet Options->Advanced.
Note: If you have upgraded to Microsoft XP Service Pack 2 from a previous version of Windows, you will likely still have the Microsoft JVM because the upgrade will not remove it if it exists. New machines that come with XP SP2 from the factory will not have this JVM and a Java 2 JRE must be the default Java Runtime.
