Learn how to upgrade HCL Launch elements, including the server, and agents, and how to migrate data.
Upgrading the server
You can upgrade the HCL Launch server to incorporate to a later version. Always upgrade agents, agent relays, and the blueprint design server in addition to upgrading the server. Upgrading the server, agents, agent relays, and blueprint design server are each completed independently. Unless specified, upgrade the server before you upgrade the agents.

- Upgrading the server
  You can upgrade the HCL Launch server to incorporate to a later version. Always upgrade agents, agent relays, and the blueprint design server in addition to upgrading the server. Upgrading the server, agents, agent relays, and blueprint design server are each completed independently. Unless specified, upgrade the server before you upgrade the agents.
  - Upgrading the server in interactive mode
    To upgrade the server, stop the server and run the new installation program.
  - Upgrading the server in silent mode
    Use silent mode to upgrade without command-line prompts. To upgrade the server, stop the server, edit the properties file, and run the new installation program. These instructions apply to upgrades from versions 6.0 and later.
  - Releasing VC LOB space
    After you upgrade to HCL Launch 7.0.5 and later, you can compress the amount of large object (LOB) storage space that HCL Launch uses in the vc_persistent_record database table.
- Upgrading high-availability installations
  All servers that are configured for the HA feature must be on the same version. Thus, all servers must be upgraded at the same time.
- Upgrading agents
  In most cases, you upgrade agents from the server interface, but you can also upgrade the agents from the command line. Always upgrade agents and agent relays in addition to upgrading the server.
- Upgrading agent relays
  In most cases, you upgrade agents relays from the command line, but starting from 7.0.4.2 version, you can upgrade the server from the interface. Always upgrade agents and agent relays in addition to upgrading the server.
- Upgrading encryption key strength
  When you upgrade the server from version 6.0.1.1 or earlier to a version later than version 6.0.1.1, you can upgrade the SSL encryption.
- Migrating the server database
  The server installation files include a script that migrates the server database from Derby to another database system. You can not migrate from any database other than Derby.

Upgrading the server

You can upgrade the HCL Launch server to incorporate to a later version. Always upgrade agents, agent relays, and the blueprint design server in addition to upgrading the server. Upgrading the server, agents, agent relays, and blueprint design server are each completed independently. Unless specified, upgrade the server before you upgrade the agents.

About this task

Upgrading the HCL Launch server can be performed using the same methods as an initial installation. However, there are a number of considerations that must be taken into account during an upgrade. Read the following sections before performing the upgrade. Also, check out this white paper: Upgrading to HCL Launch 7. The upgrade process is a complete replacement of the server.

Note: When you upgrade the server, only plug-ins that are shipped with the product are upgraded to newer versions. The updated plug-ins are not necessarily compatible with an earlier version. When you upgrade, previous versions of the plug-ins are kept on the server. You cannot create processes with previous versions of plug-ins, but you can deploy snapshots that use the old versions of the plug-ins.
