II. INFORMIX-Enterprise Gateway Manager User Manual

    A. Limitation on Amount of Blob Data per Set of Rows
that is Returned to the Client

The information in this section supplements the discussion
of "Blob Data Type Support Considerations" on page 5-82.

In distributed-access mode, or when processing a singleton
SELECT or singleton EXECUTE PROCEDURE statement, the Gateway
Manager buffers all the blob data returned in each set of rows
    in a single temporary file.

A single file can contain 2 gigabytes of data. In rare cases,
this temporary file might not be big enough because a single
blob can contain 2 gigabytes of data. If the total amount of
blob data in a set of rows exceeds 2 gigabytes, the Gateway
Manager returns an error to the application.

File size is not a limitation in direct-access mode with a
non-singleton SQL statement because the Gateway Manager does
not buffer the blob data in a file.

If this 2-gigabyte limitation is a problem, do the following:

    - In direct-access mode, do not use a singleton SELECT or
singleton EXECUTE PROCEDURE statement. Instead, declare and
      use a cursor.

    - In distributed-access mode, set the FET_BUF_SIZE environment
variable to reduce the size of the set of rows for the query.
Also, if necessary, replace your query with a set of queries,
where each query selects exactly one row and only one blob
      column per row.

    B. Set the INFORMIXSERVER Environment Variable if Using
            the Informix ODBC Driver

The information in this section supplements the discussion
of "Using the Informix ODBC Driver with the Gateway Manager"
on page 3-34. It is step 4.

     1. Set the INFORMIXSERVER environment variable to the Gateway
Manager server name before starting the Gateway daemon.
If you do not do this, you will get the following error at
        connection time:

         -29080: Target DBMS Error ([-25560 S1000 :00.00.0000]
Environment variable INFORMIXSERVER must be set.
