        Storage managers have slightly different installation and configuration requirements. If you use a third-party storage manager, make sure that you follow the manufacturer instructions carefully. If you have difficulty with the storage-manager installation and configuration, contact the manufacturer directly.
        Configuring Spectrum Protect
        To use IBM® Spectrum Protect with HCL Informix® databases, you must install and configure the IBM Spectrum Protect client on your database server computer and IBM Spectrum Protect on your storage computer.
        Editing the Spectrum Protect client options files
        The HCL® Informix® Interface for Spectrum Protect communicates with the Spectrum Protect server with the Spectrum Protect API. By default, HCL Informix Interface for Spectrum Protect uses the client user options file (dsm.opt) and, on UNIX™ systems, the client system options file (dsm.sys), both of which are located in the Spectrum Protect API installation directory.
        Assigning a Spectrum Protect management class for a backup
        When you back up a database, the default management class for your node is used. You can override the default value with a different value that is specified in the INCLUDE option.
        Setting the HCL Informix® Interface for Spectrum Protect environment variables
        When you use the HCL Informix® Interface for TSM, you need to set certain environment variables in the environment of the user.

        You must update the storage-manager definition in sm_versions file for ON-Bar to use with IBM® Spectrum Protect.

        Backup to Commvault storage manager using ON-Bar
        You can use ON-Bar to back up and restore data to or from the Commvault storage manager. User is responsible for terms and any charges associated with your use of the Commvault storage manager.
        Specifying the location of the XBSA Library
        By default, ON-Bar looks for the XBSA shared library in $INFORMIXDIR/lib/ibsad001.s[ol] on UNIX™. To specify a different name or location of the XBSA shared library, use the BAR_BSALIB_PATH configuration parameter.
      - Validating your storage manager
        When you convert or revert the HCL® Informix® database server, the storage manager that you used on the old version might not be validated for the version that you are migrating to. Verify that the storage-manager vendor successfully completed the HCL Informix validation process for the database server version and platform.

        Before you begin your first backup, review the default ON-Bar parameters in the onconfig file and adjust the values as needed. You can also set an environment variable.

Migrating and upgrading
You can upgrade to the 15.0 release of HCL Informix® or migrate from other database servers to Informix. Upgrading is an in-place migration method that uses your existing hardware and operating system software. Some changes to the Informix database server can affect upgrading from a previous release.

You can use the HCL Informix® implementation of client APIs to develop applications for Informix database servers.
Embedding Informix®
When you embed HCL Informix®, you can use enterprise-class high-availability and high performance with embeddability features such as easy programmability, a small disk and memory footprint, and silent deployment.
Extending Informix®
Beyond standard relational database objects, HCL Informix® can be extended to handle specialized data types, access methods, routines, and other objects. Informix includes many built-in extensions that are fully integrated in the database server. Informix also provides DataBlade® modules, which are packages of extended database objects for a particular purpose and that are installed separately from the database server. Alternatively, you can create your own user-defined objects for Informix.
Data warehousing
In addition to designing and implementing Informix® dimensional databases, you can use tools to create data warehouse applications and optimize your data warehouse queries.
Designing databases
The first step in creating a relational database is to construct a data model, which is a precise, complete definition of the data you want to store. After you prepare your data model, you must implement it as a database and tables. To implement your data model, you first select a data type for each column and then you create a database and tables and populate the tables with data. You can also implement fragmentation strategies and control access to your data.
JSON compatibility
You can use the popular JSON-oriented query language created by MongoDB to interact with data stored in HCL Informix®.
Security
You can secure your Informix® database server and the data that is stored in your Informix databases. You can encrypt data, secure connections, control user privileges and access, and audit data security.
SQL programming
You can use the HCL Informix® implementation of the SQL language to develop applications for Informix database servers.
Troubleshooting HCL Informix®
Several troubleshooting techniques, tools, and resources are available for resolving problems that you encounter in your HCL Informix® database server environment.

Registering with the Spectrum Protect server

Before backing up to and recovering from an IBM® Spectrum Protect server, you must have a Spectrum Protect registered node name and a password. The process of setting up a node name and password is called registration.

After the HCL® Informix® Interface for Spectrum Protect node is registered with a Spectrum Protect server, you can begin using the HCL® Informix® Interface for Spectrum Protect to back up and restore your HCL® Informix® storage spaces and logical logs. If your workstation has a node name assigned to the Spectrum Protect backup-archive client, you should have a different node name for HCL® Informix® Interface for Spectrum Protect.
