Embed Superset Dashboards in CDP
Integrate Apache Superset with HCL CDP to enable advanced, ad-hoc data exploration and custom reporting through embedded dashboards.
Apache Superset integrates with HCL CDP to provide advanced, ad-hoc data exploration and custom reporting. While standard out-of-the-box performance cards (such as channel performance and revenue analysis) remain native within HCL CDP, Superset allows administrators to query connected data engines, design custom visualizations, and embed dashboards directly into HCL CDP and the Unica Platform landing interface.
Prerequisites
- Dedicated Superset Instance: A deployed, running instance of Apache Superset accessible to HCL CDP environment.
- Administrative Access: Appropriate credentials and permissions in both Apache Superset and HCL CDP/Unica Platform to manage database connections, dashboards, and UI customizations.
- Database Connection Details (Unica Reports Platform): Standard SQLAlchemy/JDBC connection URLs for your data warehouse or query engine or an AWS Athena SQLAlchemy URI with the required IAM Access Key, Secret Key, along with host, port, credentials, and database/catalog names.
- Target Application Domain URLs: The exact Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs) and URLs for your HCL CDP and Platform environments (for example, https://<cdp-instance-domain>) to configure cross-origin embedding permissions.
Configuration Workflow Overview
Embedding Superset visualizations within HCL CDP involves preparing and publishing a dashboard in Superset, and then embedding it into HCL CDP. Most of the configuration work happens in Superset:
- Connect your database engine in Superset by adding a database connection with the appropriate SQLAlchemy URI and credentials.
- Use SQL Lab to write queries against your connected data sources and save the results as datasets.
- Build charts from these datasets, selecting dimensions, metrics, and visualization formatting to match your reporting needs.
- Assemble the charts into a dashboard, add any dashboard-level filters, and publish the dashboard.
- Enable embedding on the published dashboard and add HCL CDP/Platform domain URLs to the list of allowed domains so that HCL CDP can securely render the dashboard in an embedded frame.
Once the dashboard is published and embedding is enabled for your HCL CDP domain, complete the following steps in HCL CDP to display the dashboard.
Configure Tenant-Specific Dashboard
To configure a dashboard for a specific tenant in Superset, complete the following steps:
- Create a tag using the tenant ID (for example,
6602). - Navigate to the Dashboards page and click the Edit icon for the dashboard.
- In the Access & Ownership section, attach the tenant tag to the dashboard.
- Save the changes.
Embed Superset Dashboard in CDP
- Open HCL CDP and log in.
- Navigate to your dashboard view.
- Click the + (Add new tab) icon to create a dedicated tab for custom analytics (for example, label it Superset or Custom Reports).
- Click Add Card within the newly created tab or the Customize Dashboard link at the top right corner.
- On the dashboard selection modal, in the Tab Name field, select the newly created tab name, and in the Allowed Chart Source field, select Superset.
- Locate and select the published Superset dashboard.
- Click Update to embed the card.
- Resize and position the embedded card across the layout grid according to user preference.
- Save your changes to complete the setup.
