  2. Configuring

Use this information to configure an IBM® Domino® network, users, servers (including Web servers), directory services, security, messaging, widgets and live text, and server clusters. Also use this information to set up IBM iNotes® on a server using Domino Off-Line Services (DOLS).

  3. Domino® Off-Line Services

Domino® Off-Line Services (DOLS) provides a way for users to take Domino Web applications offline, work in them, and synchronize the changes with an online replica on the Domino server. Users are not required to have Notes® client because the applications are accessed with a browser.

  4. Optional tasks for DOLS administrators

In addition to required administration tasks, there are a few optional tasks for the administrator.

  • Configuring

Use this information to configure an IBM® Domino® network, users, servers (including Web servers), directory services, security, messaging, widgets and live text, and server clusters. Also use this information to set up IBM iNotes® on a server using Domino Off-Line Services (DOLS).

    • Configuring a network

This section presents the planning concepts and setup procedures necessary for a successful IBM® Domino® deployment over a network. It provides information on network protocols from a Domino perspective but does not attempt to provide general network information.

    • Configuring users and servers

Topics in this section describe how to set up users and servers.

    • Editing the NOTES.INI file

You should rarely, if ever, need to modify a server's or client's NOTES.INI file. The NOTES.INI file contains many settings that Domino® and Notes® rely on to work properly. An accidental or incorrect change may cause Domino or Notes to run unpredictably. Therefore, you should edit the NOTES.INI file only if special circumstances occur or if IBM® Support Services recommends that you do so.

    • Configuring directory services

This section describes how to plan, set up, and use IBM® Domino® directory services.

    • Configuring messaging

This section provides an overview of messaging and describes how to set up mail routing, how to set up and customize mail servers, and how to track mail.

    • Configuring iNotes®

IBM® iNotes® (previously IBM Domino® Web Access) provides IBM Notes® users with browser-based access to Notes mail and to Notes calendar and scheduling features. Administrators specify mail policy and security policy settings as well as notes.ini file settings to complete the full implementation of IBM iNotes.

    • Configuring Web servers

This section describes how to set up the IBM® Domino® Web server, the Domino Web Navigator, and other Web servers such as IBM HTTP.

    • Domino® Off-Line Services

Domino® Off-Line Services (DOLS) provides a way for users to take Domino Web applications offline, work in them, and synchronize the changes with an online replica on the Domino server. Users are not required to have Notes® client because the applications are accessed with a browser.

      • Overview of DOLS administrator tasks

Administrators perform the following tasks to prepare a DOLS subscription for users.

      • Creating a DOLS Offline Security Policy document

Use Offline Security Policy documents to set different ID policies for users in different domains. For example, you can generate IDs automatically for users inside the company, but require users in a domain outside the company to provide IDs you have given them.

      • Increasing security for DOLS subscriptions

There are several options for increasing security on DOLS subscriptions.

      • Increasing the server output timeout for DOLS downloads

DOLS administrators should increase the output timeout time if users will be installing the DOLS file set over a phone line.

      • Configuring the DOLS subscription

You choose configuration settings for the subscription in the Offline Subscription Configuration Profile document. You must edit and save a configuration document in every subscription even if you make no changes to the document. A subscription can have only one configuration document, even if the subscription has multiple databases. The configuration document must be stored in the main database. The main database is the database in the subscription from which the user downloads the subscription.

      • Copying DOLS design elements into the main database

You must copy several elements from DOLRES.NTF (the DOLS Resource template) into the main database of your subscription. The database you choose should be the first database the user sees when opening the subscription.

      • Setting up agents for the DOLS subscription

Agents are small programs that perform actions in a subscription. Because they can be powerful tools, they must have permission from the server to perform their actions. Agents inherit the permissions of their signer. An agent's signer can be the user who created it, or a user or organization designated by an administrator. An administrator can also register a "dummy" user on the server and make it the signer of agents. This provides more control and security, because the dummy user will not do anything the administrator does not want done.

      • Optional tasks for DOLS administrators

In addition to required administration tasks, there are a few optional tasks for the administrator.

        • Adding a directory catalog to a DOLS subscription

Adding a directory catalog to a DOLS (Domino® Offline Services) subscription allows users to take IBM® Domino Directory information offline.

        • Viewing DOLS download information

You can view information on subscription use.

        • Reducing DOLS download time with the client installation media

The DOLS Client Pre-Installer media is an alternative to having users install subscriptions from the server over a slow connection. The CD or DVD includes client drivers and IBM® iNotes® file sets. You can add database subscriptions, custom file sets that were created for the subscriptions, and custom programs intended to run after the installation.

        • Reducing DOLS download time with selective replication

By controlling how much of the mail file is replicated offline, you can control the size of a subscription and reduce download time for remote users who may have a slow connection.

        • Web Control instructions for DOLS users

The Web Control is a pop-up menu in the subscription from which users can install the subscription, synchronize, choose a language for the interface text, and open the subscription online or offline. To open the pop-up menu, users click either Go Offline, or an image in a frame on the main Web page of the subscription.

        • Customizing how users install the DOLS subscription

You have two choices for how users install and possibly manage a DOLS subscription: the Web Control or an icon. You must choose one, then copy the appropriate design element into the main database of the subscription. You must then create a frame in the main frameset of the subscription and place either the Web Control or icon in it.

      • DOLS troubleshooting and error messages

If you have problems configuring a subscription to go offline, you may want to look at the files DOL.LOG and LOG.NSF.

    • Setting up a cluster

Setting up a cluster includes the tasks of creating and verifying that it is working correctly, and then setting up user access, mail, replications, size quotas, directory assistance, roaming, web navigation, and use of a private LAN in the cluster.

Optional tasks for DOLS administrators

In addition to required administration tasks, there are a few optional tasks for the administrator.
