Prerequisites for installing Domino® on IBM® i

Before you install and set up your first Domino® server, you must plan server and organizational naming and security. In addition, you must understand your existing network configuration and how Domino® will fit into the network.

This section highlights some of the decisions you should make before you install Domino® on IBM® i.

  1. Before you install the Domino® server program files, do the following:
    • Read the System Requirements Tech Note at the IBM® Support Site for operating system and network requirements.
    • Temporarily disable any screen savers and turn off any virus-detection software.
    • Complete any pending reboot actions.
    • Make sure that all other applications are closed.

Before installing Domino® on IBM® i, verify the following:

  • You have a user profile with the required authorities to install and configure Domino®.
  • You have installed the required hardware and software.
  • TCP/IP is set up and active on your system.

When you install Domino®, licensed program objects such as programs (*PGM) and service programs (*SRVPGM) are placed in a release-specific library such as QDOM100001.

Miscellaneous objects are placed in the QUSRNOTES library. For example, the following objects would be stored in the QUSRNOTES library:

  • All Domino® subsystem descriptions
  • All data queues and job queues for the servers
  • Status of the servers

Basic Domino® files, such as .NSFs and .NTFs, as well as files that contain symbolic links to programs, service programs, and other objects in the release-specific QNOTES library are created in the release-specific NOTES directory in the iSeries® integrated file system. These symbolic links provide access to the objects in the release-specific library from the integrated file system. The IBM® i integrated file system provides a directory structure similar to the Domino® installation on a Microsoft™ Windows™ or UNIX™ operating system. The /QIBM/USERDATA/LOTUS/NOTES directory is created in the integrated file system. Users who create programs accessed by Domino® must add symbolic links to their programs in this directory.

The QNOTES user profile is created for use by Domino® and Notes® application programs that run on IBM® i. This user profile is intended for system functions and for integration with the underlying IBM® i security mechanisms; therefore, it does not have a password. Individual users cannot use the QNOTES user profile to sign on to the system server.

Note: Do not delete the QNOTES user profile.

Domino® servers and subsystems must be stopped while installing software. If you already have Domino® servers configured on the system, make sure you stop these servers and their subsystems before installing the Domino® for IBM® i software.

Note: If all configured servers are multi-version capable servers, you can install a new version of Domino® software while they are still running.

The server data directory should not reside in the QIBM directory. When setting up a Domino® server, do not specify the Domino® product directory, /QIBM/ProdData/..., or the Domino® user directory, /QIBM/UserData/..., as the location of the server data directory. Putting the server data directory within the product directory could cause problems when operating the server, especially if you run more than one Domino® server on your system.

A commonly used location for the server data directory is /domino/data:

If you have more than one Domino® server on your system, you could specify a location such as /domino/servername/data, where servername is the name you specify for each server.
