ODS 53 supports larger databases and folders

The maximum size of databases allowed in IBM Domino 10 has increased to 256 GB; previously it was 64 GB. In addition, the maximum size of folders has increased significantly. Although the precise maximum size is difficult to quantify, users can expect at least a 10-fold increase in folder size capacity.

To take advantage of the increased database and folder size capacity, upgrade databases to the Domino 10 On-Disk Structure, ODS 53. After you upgrade a database on a Domino 10 server to ODS 53:
  • A Notes 10 client can open the database on the Domino 10 server and access all the content regardless of database or folder size. A Notes 9 client can open the database without issue only if the database and folder sizes are within the Notes 9 size limits.
  • Up to 64 GB of database data can replicate to a target replica on any version of a Domino server or Notes client. To replicate more than 64 GB of data, the target replica must be on a Domino 10 server or Notes 10 client and be upgraded to ODS 53.
  • Folders in the database that are within the size limit of the previous release can replicate to a target replica on any version of a Domino server or Notes client. If a folder in the database exceeds the previous-release size limit, its entire contents can replicate only with a replica upgraded to ODS 53 on a Domino 10 server or Notes 10 client.

  2. Compact the databases to upgrade: Run compact -c or use database maintenance tool (dbmt) to compact automatically.

Or, create the database with the extension .ns10, for example, discussion.ns10.
Upgrade databases on Notes 10 clients to the latest ODS and automatically upgrade to a future ODS when it becomes available. (Best practice for production environment) Use a Desktop Settings policy:
  1. From the Domino directory, select People > Policies > Settings.
  2. If a Desktop Settings document exists that you want to use, open it in edit mode. Otherwise, create a new one: click Add Settings > Desktop and give it a name.
  3. On the Mail tab, under Client Settings, enable the setting Enable upgrade of all local NSFs to latest ODS version.
  4. Add the Desktop settings to a policy, if not done already.

Alternatively, add the setting NSF_UpdateODS=1 to client notes.ini files.
Upgrade databases on Notes 10 clients to ODS 53.
  1. Add the following notes.ini setting to clients: Create_R10_Databases=1
  2. Create a new replica or copy of the database and delete the original.
Use ODS 53 when creating new databases on a Domino 10 server or Notes 10 client.

Add the setting Create_R10_Databases=1 to the notes.ini file on the server or client; new databases automatically use ODS 53.

Or, create the database with the extension .ns10, for example, discussion.ns10.
Note: To revert a database to the previous ODS version, in this case the Release 9 version, ODS 52, use the server console command compact -r <database_path>.
