File Handling
This chapter describes file handling in the LotusScript® language.
Reading, writing, and closing files
You can use LotusScript® to read and write files. To create a file, you open and write to a file that does not yet exist; LotusScript creates it automatically.
Spaces in LotusScript® file names
All LotusScript® routines preserve embedded and trailing spaces in file names. However, some LotusScript file handling routines preserve leading spaces from file name arguments, while others remove leading spaces.

    - File operations
      The following table describes the three kinds of files in LotusScript®: sequential, random, and binary.
    - Sequential files
      A sequential file is an ordinary text file. Each character in the file is assumed to be either a text character or some other ASCII control character such as newline. The character is in the character set specified when the file is opened. By default this is the platform-native character set.
    - Random files
      A random file is made up of a series of records of identical length. A record can correspond to a scalar data type, such as Integer or String, or to a user-defined type, in which each record is broken down into fields corresponding to the members of the type.
    - Binary files
      Binary files are designed to provide the most control over the organization of your data for both reading and writing. However, you must know exactly how the file was written.
    - Reading, writing, and closing files
      You can use LotusScript® to read and write files. To create a file, you open and write to a file that does not yet exist; LotusScript creates it automatically.
      - Opening files
        Use the FreeFile function to get a file number, and then use an Open statement to open a file.
      - Reading from files and writing to them
        If you open the file for sequential input or append access, you can use the Input function to read a specified number of characters into a String (or Variant) variable. For example, you can use the Input function in conjunction with the LOF function, which returns the length of an open file, to read the entire file (up to 32,000 characters) into a String variable:
      - Closing files
        As soon as you complete your read/write operations, use the Close statement to close the file. If you modified the file, the Close statement also writes modifications to disk.

Spaces in LotusScript® file names

All LotusScript® routines preserve embedded and trailing spaces in file names. However, some LotusScript® file handling routines preserve leading spaces from file name arguments, while others remove leading spaces.

These routines preserve leading spaces:

Dir
Filedatetime
Kill
Open
Setfileattr

These routines remove leading spaces:

Chdir
Filelen
Mkdir
Name
Rmdir

To ensure that all file handling routines are able to correctly handle files, file names should not have leading spaces.
