Data management

Test Author Guide
This guide describes how to create and edit test assets in HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub), and then publish test assets to the remote Git repository that you have configured in your project. This guide is intended for testers and test managers.
- Edit branch overview
  When you want to create or modify a test resource in HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub), you must use an Edit branch. An Edit branch is a temporary branch created from the selected branch in the repository configured within the project, where you can save the created or edited resource.
- Test Editor overview
  You can use the Test Editor tab to create and manage test assets such as applications, Web UI tests, test suites, and environments in HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub).
- Application management
  When you want to create and manage Web UI tests in HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub), you must first create an application within the project.
- Web UI test management
  You can test your web applications by recording Web UI tests in HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub). Test Hub supports industry-standard browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox to record and play back Web UI tests. After the playback, you can evaluate the test results.
- Test suite management
  A suite is a collection of the tests and other suites. You can combine the multiple tests and suites into a single workflow and organize them into a suite.
- Test variables
  A test variable is a user-defined, name-value pair that stores and refers to information throughout a test. You can assign the value of a variable to a test element or assign the value of a UI object property to a test variable.
- Test environments
  You can define custom environments to manage sets of variables such as application URLs and user credentials, and to configure profile overrides. When you run a test, the variables and override rules defined in the environment dynamically replace the values within your test script. You can easily change testing targets without modifying your test script by using environments because the environment-level configurations take precedence over the default values defined in the script.
- Catalog management
  You can use the data catalog in HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub) to browse and manage data generators used in test data creation. The catalog section provides access to built-in generators, allows you to create custom generators tailored to specific needs, and group them using custom categories.
- Data management

      You can create an empty schema to define a structured data storage. Initially, the schema is not connected to any database.

      When your tests require data that reflects existing database models, you can create a schema by connecting to an existing database. You can retrieve and manage live data structures that help your test data reflect production schema complexity and relationships more accurately.

      You can manage and organize data definitions within a schema to support consistent and accurate test data generation.

        You can use AI assistance to automatically assign generators and AI-provided data configurations to the fields in data definitions within the Schema View.
    - Deleting a schema
      You can delete a schema when it is outdated or no longer relevant to your project. Additionally, if a schema contains errors or inaccuracies that might lead to the generation of misleading or incorrect fabricated data, then you might want to remove them. By removing such shemas, you can maintain a clean and organized workspace, optimize the performance of HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub), and reduce unnecessary storage usage.
  - Publishing changes in data definitions, datasets, or schemas
    After creating or modifying a data definition, dataset, or schema in HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub), you can publish changes from an Edit branch to the source branch in the project repository. After you publish the changes, other members of the project can view and work with the updated datasets.
  - Generating fabricated test data
    You can generate fabricated test data in HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub) to support a wide range of test scenarios. The generated data is saved as a CSV file on your system and can be used to override existing datasets during test execution.
- Publishing all changes in an Edit branch
  After you create or modify any data or test assets in an Edit branch of a project in HCL DevOps Test Hub (Test Hub), you can publish all the changes that are in an Edit branch to the source branch in the project repository. After publishing, other members in the project can view and use the resources.

Auto-assigning generators and AI-provided data configurations to data definitions in the Schema View

You can use AI assistance to automatically assign generators and AI-provided data configurations to the fields in data definitions within the Schema View.

Before you begin

You must have completed the following tasks:

Ensured that you are assigned a Team Space Owner, Project Owner, or Member with a Tester role to create or edit a test resource.
Read and understood the information in Edit branch overview and Create or select an Edit branch.
Ensured that your project contains a Web UI test or suite.
Ensured that the required variables have been created and are included in your Web UI test or suite.
Ensured that your project contains a dataset.
Ensured that you have configured the required AI provider credentials. For more information, see Adding cloud credentials of AI providers.

About this task

When a schema contains multiple data definitions and fields, manually assigning generators and configuring them can be time-consuming. AI-based inference analyzes the available field information and recommends suitable generators and data configurations for the selected data definitions.

Note:

Existing generators remain unchanged unless you select the option to overwrite them.

Procedure

Log in to Test Hub.
The Projects page of the initial team space is displayed.
Click My projects > project_name to open the project that contains the test assets.

The Overview page of the project is displayed.
Click Author > Data.
The Data page and the data navigator panel are displayed.
Select the schema that you want to edit in the data navigator panel.

The selected schema opens in the Data page.
Click the Update icon .
Select the Assign generators to fields checkbox.

The AI Provider option is displayed.
Select the configured AI Provider from the drop-down list.

Note:
When you select an AI provider, sample data from the selected tables is shared with the AI service to configure generators.
Optional: Select the Overwrite existing generators checkbox to overwrite the existing generators.
Click Update.

Note:
Verify the AI-provided generator configurations to ensure their accuracy, as AI-produced data might contain errors.

Results

You have automatically assigned generators and AI-provided data configurations to the fields in the selected data definitions.
