Capacity Planning package
The Capacity Planning package helps to enable the use of the Capacity Planning feature in HCL DevOps Plan.
The Capacity Planning package is used by the Capacity Planning feature of DevOps Plan. You can use this feature to create and edit the capacity plan only if you are in the CapacityPlanningConfigAdmins group. All other users can access the Capacity Planning dashboard by clicking .
In DevOps Plan 3.0.3, the Capacity Planning package is pre-applied to the Agile and FullSafe schemas only and is not available for any other schema.
The Capacity Planning feature helps track and manage how employees use their time. This feature is available exclusively to team managers. With access to the feature, you can ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and that teams operate at their optimal capacity.
On the Capacity Planning dashboard, you can view both group and individual capacity details for a selected release. These metrics display the total amount of work allocated, helping managers understand the workload distribution among team members. It also shows the available capacity and total utilized percentage of a group and an individual. These values are essential to identify discrepancies and help ensure that the resources are being used effectively.
On the Capacity Planning dashboard, you can also view resource capacity details by sorting, as needed. In the Agile schema, you can sort by Projects, Releases, Sprints, and Type. In the FullSafe schema, you can sort by ReleaseTrain, Solutions, Teams, PI, Iterations, and Owner.
The utilization rate, expressed as a percentage, is the ratio of utilized capacity to allocated capacity, providing a clear measure of how efficiently resources are being used. A high utilization rate indicates that the team is working at or near its full capacity, while a lower rate indicates that there is room for better resource allocation or process improvements.
Capacities can be calculated in two ways: by using story points or hours. In the FullSafe schema, you should select only story points. Story points are often used to estimate the effort required for tasks, offering a more abstract measure of workload. Alternatively, in the Agile schema, capacities can also be calculated in hours, providing a more precise understanding of time allocation and utilization. With this flexibility teams can choose the method that best suits their project management style.
