Why it matters
The
purpose of Canada's Personal
Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act is to establish
rules to govern the collection, use and disclosure of personal information
in a manner that recognizes the right of privacy of individuals with
respect to their personal information and the need of organizations
to collect, use, or disclose personal information for purposes that
a reasonable person might consider appropriate in the circumstances.
The Act applies to personal information collected, used or disclosed
by federally regulated private sector, organizations such as banks,
airlines, and telecommunications companies, the retail sector, publishing
companies, the service industry, manufacturers and other provincially
regulated organizations.
