What's new in Feature Pack 8?

The following features and enhancements for administrators are new in IBM® Domino® 9.0.1 Social Edition Feature Pack 8.

Move views out of databases

You can move views out of databases into separate view index files (.NDX files). This feature is useful for large databases and provides the following benefits:
  • A smaller database file size, to avoid reaching the 64GB limitation.
  • Faster database backup and restore.
  • Better performance by allowing concurrent access to database and views.
.NDX files have a limit of 1 TB. The real determination of how large the views can grow is based on application responsiveness or if any other limits are reached before the 1 TB .NDX file limit is reached.

Increase the document summary data limit to 16 MB

You can increase the document summary data limit on Notes® 9 databases. Summary data is data in non-rich-text fields, number fields, and date-time fields.

Previously the combined size of all summary data fields in a document was limited to 64 K. This limit is now 16 MB. The size limit for a single field is still 64 K. The size limit for views is still 64K for the combined key and data.

To increase the summary data limit on a database, use the following server command:
load compact -LargeSummary on database.nsf

Java™ JRE version 1.8 provided with Domino®

The Java™ run time environment provided with Notes® and Domino® has been upgraded to Java™ JRE version 1.8 to provide you with access to the latest features. Domino® Designer continues to compile with Java™ 1.6.

Enable the Group By Date feature in all mail files

Administrators can push the notes.ini setting EnableGroupByDate=1 to Notes® clients to enable the Show > Group By Date option in mail files. When enabled, messages in the Inbox, All Documents view, and personal folders on the IBM® Notes® client are grouped by relative date: Today, Yesterday, Last Week, and so forth.

Users can select Show > Group By Date to turn off the setting.

Enable the Show Beginning of Message feature in all mail files

Administrators can push the notes.ini setting EnableBeginningOfMessage=1 to Notes® clients to enable the Show > Beginning of Message option in mail files.

When enabled, Notes® client users see the first 100 characters of a message in their Inbox or personal folders along with the subject. Users can select Show > Beginning of Message to turn off the setting.

Retain MIME formatting when forwarding or replying to internet messages

Administrators can push the notes.ini setting KeepReplyForwardMime=1 to Notes® standard clients. This setting retains MIME message formatting when users reply to or forward messages received from the internet. Without this setting, MIME messages are converted to Notes® Rich Text which can cause some MIME formatting to be lost.

When this setting is enabled and users respond to or forward messages from the internet, the Notes® embedded browser is used to display the original messages with MIME fidelity. Users can't edit the original messages, but they can copy information from them and paste it into their responses.

Notes® browser plug-in is no longer part of Notes® package

The Notes® browser plug-in is no longer provided with the Notes® client package. IBM® Client Application Access (ICAA), a new lightweight client that provides access to Notes® applications, can be used instead. ICAA is available to Notes® customers free of charge and can be downloaded from Passport Advantage®. For more information, see the IBM® Client Application Access documentation.

ADFS 3.0 now supported as a SAML federated identity provider

Microsoft™ Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) 3.0 can be used as a Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) federated identity provider (IdP). For more information, see the section Using Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) to configure federated-identity authentication.
