Installing on Linux

The Linux client is distributed as an AppImage: a single executable file that contains the application and everything it depends on. There is nothing to install system-wide, no package manager repository to add, and no root access required.

Before you begin

  • A 64-bit Linux distribution with a graphical desktop.
  • The AppImage file from your IT department. It is usually delivered inside a .tar.gz archive.
  • A system tray or status area in your desktop environment. GNOME does not show tray icons without an extension such as AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support; install it first, otherwise the client runs with no visible icon.

Install and run

  1. Extract the archive if you received one:
tar -xzf DominoWorkspaceSync-<version>.tar.gz
  1. Move the AppImage somewhere permanent. A good choice is a folder in your home directory that you will not clean out by accident:
mkdir -p ~/Applications
mv DominoWorkspaceSync-<version>-x86_64.AppImage ~/Applications/
  1. Make it executable:
chmod +x ~/Applications/DominoWorkspaceSync-<version>-x86_64.AppImage
  1. Start it:
~/Applications/DominoWorkspaceSync-<version>-x86_64.AppImage

The client appears in your system tray. Continue with Getting started to connect your account.

Adding it to your application menu

An AppImage does not register itself. Two ways to get a launcher:

Let your desktop offer to integrate it. Some desktops detect a newly run AppImage and ask whether to add it to the menu. Accept, and the entry is created for you.

Create the launcher by hand. Save the following as ~/.local/share/applications/dominoworkspacesync.desktop, adjusting the paths:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Domino Workspace Sync
Exec=/home/YOUR_USER/Applications/DominoWorkspaceSync-x86_64.AppImage
Icon=/home/YOUR_USER/Applications/dominoworkspacesync.png
Categories=Network;FileTransfer;
Terminal=false

Then run update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications if your desktop does not pick it up immediately.

Starting automatically

The Settings → General → Launch on System Startup option writes an autostart entry for you. If you prefer to manage it yourself, create ~/.config/autostart/dominoworkspacesync.desktop with the same content as the launcher above.

If the AppImage does not start

dlopen(): error loading libfuse.so.2

AppImages mount themselves using FUSE 2, which recent distributions no longer install by default. Install the compatibility package:

# Debian, Ubuntu and derivatives
sudo apt install libfuse2

# Fedora
sudo dnf install fuse-libs

If you cannot install packages, run the AppImage without FUSE by extracting it:

./DominoWorkspaceSync-<version>-x86_64.AppImage --appimage-extract
./squashfs-root/AppRun

Nothing appears at all

Start it from a terminal and read the output — errors about missing tray support or a missing display appear there. See Troubleshooting.

File manager integration

The AppImage does not integrate with Nautilus, Nemo, Caja or Dolphin. Those integrations are separate extensions that have to be built against your distribution's file manager, and cannot be bundled into a self-contained AppImage.

Use the client's own window to check sync status: open it from the tray icon to see the status of each folder and the recent activity list. See Everyday use.

Everything else — two-way sync, selective sync, bandwidth limits, ignore rules — works exactly as on the other platforms.

Updating

Replace the old AppImage file with the new one you were given, keeping the same path if you created a launcher or autostart entry. Your account settings are stored separately in ~/.config/Domino Workspace Sync and are preserved.
