Central Search
Central Search is the unified search facility in Domino Workspace. From a single search box you can find content across your Chat conversations and Files — without needing to know which app the content lives in.
Note: The first release of Domino Workspace supports searching Chat and Files content. Additional content types may be added in future releases.
Getting Started
- Click the search box in the Domino Workspace navigation bar (or click the search icon) to open Central Search.
- Type a search term and press Enter.
- Results appear in a single list, with your search terms highlighted in each result.
To clear the current search, use the ✕ (clear) button in the search box, or press Escape to close the search panel.
Choosing What to Search
Use the tabs at the top of the search panel to scope your search:
| Tab | Searches |
|---|---|
| All | Everything — Chat and Files together |
| Chat | Chat messages and conversations |
| Files | File names and file contents (including attachments) |
The All tab is selected by default. Switching tabs re-runs your current search against the selected content type.
How Searching Works
Central Search adapts the type of search it runs based on what you type:
Single search term
A single word (for example, budget) runs a hybrid search: your term is matched both literally (keyword matching) and by meaning (semantic matching). This means you may see relevant results that use related wording — for example, searching for house can also find content mentioning home or building.
Multiple search terms
Two or more words (for example, budget forecast) run a keyword search in which all terms must be present (the terms are AND-ed together). A result is returned only if it contains both budget and forecast — though not necessarily next to each other or in that order.
Wildcard search
Add * to the end of a term to match any word beginning with those letters:
app*— matches app, apps, application, appointment, …test app*— matches content containing test and any word starting with app
Exact phrase search
Wrap your query in double quotes to match the words exactly, in order:
"quarterly budget review"— matches only that exact phrase"quarterly bud*"— a trailing wildcard inside quotes is also supported; the last word is treated as a prefix
Proximity search
Find words that appear near each other by adding ~N after a quoted phrase, where N is the maximum number of words apart:
"quick fox"~5— matches content where quick and fox appear within 5 words of each other, in any order
Note: The
~Nsuffix only has meaning after a quoted phrase. On an unquoted query it is ignored.
Quick reference
| You type | What happens |
|---|---|
budget | Hybrid search (keyword + meaning-based) |
budget forecast | Keyword search — both words must be present |
test app* | Wildcard — test plus any word starting with app |
"quick fox" | Exact phrase match |
"quick fox"~5 | quick and fox within 5 words of each other |
Refining Results with Filters
Open the filter controls in the search panel to narrow your results:
- Author — show only content created or sent by specific people. Start typing a name and select from the suggestions; you can select multiple authors.
- Date — restrict results to Today, Yesterday, Past week, Past month, or a Custom date range.
- Tags — filter by tags. Certain keywords act as shortcuts:
favorites, flagged, orstarredlimit results to items you have flagged.- Attachments — show only results that have attachments, or filter by attachment type.
Active filters apply to the current search and remain in effect until you change or clear them.
Working with Results
Opening a result
Click a result to open it in the app where the content is located — a chat message opens in Chat at that conversation, and a file opens in Files. Items you open are remembered in your Recently visited list for quick access later.
Result list
- Matching terms are highlighted in each result.
- Results are ranked by relevance, with up to the top 100 results available.
- Scroll (or press Load more) to reveal further results, up to the cap. A footer indicates when you are viewing the top results for your search.
Keyboard navigation
You can navigate results entirely from the keyboard — focus stays in the search box while you move through the list:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| ↓ / ↑ | Move the highlight down / up one result |
| Page Down / Page Up (fn+↓ / fn+↑ on macOS) | Move a screen at a time |
| Cmd/Ctrl + ↓ | Jump to the last result |
| Cmd/Ctrl + ↑ | Jump back to the top |
| Enter | Open the highlighted result (or re-run the search if nothing is highlighted) |
| Escape | Close the search panel |
If you start typing again while a result is highlighted, the highlight is cleared and Enter runs a new search instead.
Recent Searches and Recently Visited
When you open Central Search with an empty search box, you'll see:
- Recent searches — your latest search terms. Click one to run it again, remove an individual entry with its ✕, or clear the whole list. Recent searches are saved to your profile, so they follow you across devices.
- Recently visited — items you recently opened from search results, for one-click return access.
Additional Notes
- Language support — the Central Search interface is available in multiple languages and follows your Domino Workspace locale, including right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.
- Your results only — search results are personal: you only see content you have access to.
- Minimum query length — very short queries (for example, a single character) may not trigger a search until you type more.
