Customizing Profiles
Customize the Profiles application to define the core data model for people within your deployment and tailor the presentation of profile content to meet your organization’s requirements.
Customizing the Profiles data model
The Profiles application provides the social directory structure leveraged by all other HCL Connections™ applications. You can use a combination of standard properties and extension properties to customize the data in Profiles to meet the unique needs of your deployment.
Profile-types
A profile-type defines a set of properties, also referred to as a schema, that are inherent to all profiles of that type. This set of properties is used internally to group objects and enforce overall system constraints. Examples of common profile-types are customer, employee, and contractor.
Person profile-type
Profiles defines a single snx:person base profile-type that all profile-types inherit from.

    Use the following guidelines to help you to implement and manage customizations in your deployment of HCL Connections™.
  - Injecting customizations into Connections pages
    HCL Connections™ Customizer is a proxy service that lets you modify the HCL Connections user experience. Customizer intercepts and modifies requests from clients and responses from servers, so it can customize anything that flows through it, such as the behavior of APIs or the look-and-feel of the user interface.
  - Customizing the user interface
    The procedure to customize HCL Connections™ is the same for each application. You must edit a copy of the relevant source file and save it in the appropriate customization directory.
  - Customizing notifications
    The content of the notifications sent by HCL Connections™ is defined in templates that are processed by the FreeMarker engine.

    Create your own gadgets and add them to the Share dialog.
  - Customizing a blog theme
    Customize a blog theme to change the look of a blog. Or create a new theme and make it available to your blog users.

When you install IBM® Cognos® Business Intelligence to support the Metrics application, a set of standard reports is immediately available. You can customize the standard reports by editing the configuration file that defines each report’s layout. In addition, you can use IBM Cognos Report Studio to create new reports.

        Configuring profile types for widget layout
        To configure widget layout, you can add a profile type containing the widget layout configuration to Profiles in the widgets-config.xml file.

        Profiles defines a single snx:person base profile-type that all profile-types inherit from.
        Default profile-type
        To maintain compatability with earlier versions, Profiles maintains the concept of a default profile-type.
      - Specifying a custom field as required and declaring maximum field length
        You can make a custom field a required field by editing the validation.xml file. You must declare a maximum length definition for all custom fields.
    - Customizing the Profiles user interface
      Specify which attributes should display in Profiles based on the needs of your organization.
    - Specifying properties to expose in the search index
      You can manually configure which properties are made available in the search index in order to meet specific search requirements.
    - Customizing login attributes
      By default, Profiles looks at the login table and various login attributes in the Profiles database. To improve performance, comment out login attributes that are not used in your environment.

      This example demonstrates the required steps for customizing the profile data model and template files to complete a simple customization.
